No glitz, no glamour, no glory: the Met Gala 2016

After a painful browse through all the “exciting” looks from the Met Gala 2016 praised by more or less legitimate online fashion magazines, V. and I have some painful truths to tell. Firstly, it seems like everybody took a great and important theme childishly and lightly: Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. Everyone dressed as if the connection between fashion and techonology are only robots and spaceships. So why not go for metal and glitter all the way, or even something that resembles used latex? You know what I mean, Givenchy !

Sick of the army of Balmain dresses and their tasteless owners not even worth mentioning by name, we cannot help but recall the true ‘master of metal‘, Paco Rabanne. We get that these celebrities have contracts with all the big houses and stuff, but nobody dared to go vintage or Paco for that matter. At least then we could have forgiven them for not paying too much attention to the theme and hopefully  we would not have been traumatized by the sight of this horrible display of bad taste which is starting to rear its ugly head whenever too many “social media celebs”are around.

Some Paco Rabanne to make it all better:

The only one who seems to really have thought it through is Emma Watson so far.

She worked with Calvin Klein and Eco Age for a piece “crafted from three different fabrics, all woven from yarns made from recycled plastic’’ and organic cotton which could be divided in other pieces that can be worn separately to other events. Morever, as Emma declared on her FB page: ‘’ Each and every part of this beautiful gown has been produced with sustainability in mind, (…)being able to repurpose this waste and incorporate it into my gown for the #MetGala proves the power that creativity, technology and fashion can have by working together.’’

No need for glitter when you really think it through.

To conclude this sad and sappy story we have a few honorable mentions coming from Kristen Stewart (Chanel), Nicole Kidman (Alexander McQueen), Kate Bosworth(Dolce & Gabbana), Willow Smith (Chanel) and Jaden Smith (Louis Vuitton).

We are reserved even when it comes to them. They looked good and did not sting our eyes or fashion sense, but they seemed mostly careless about the event they were attending. Better than the others who wore decent or even spectacularly created gowns which did not fit them well or were styled/ modified towards disaster. We did not enjoy the ”too casual” crowd either, but at least they played it on the safe side.

As for the rest, including the aforementioned Balmain army and even the BIG names, they just failed horribly at whatever they were trying to do. There was nothing really edgy, dramatic or even stylish going on tonight. The spectacle was mostly grotesque and sad. This comes from someone who adores ‘more is more’ gowns and glitter and sequins. Not like these people, not like this. To quote V: They think they can pull out everything. It looks like they cannot.

  1. Sonya says:
